A marid (Arabic: مَارِد, romanized: mārid) is a type of devil (shayṭān) in Islamic tradition. The Arabic word, meaning "rebellious," is applied to such supernatural beings. As a substantive it refers to a chthonic demon not much dissimilar to the ʿifrīt.
