John McEnroe defeated Vitas Gerulaitis in the final, 7–5, 6–3, 6–3 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1979 US Open. It was his first major singles title. Jimmy Connors was the defending champion, but was defeated in the semifinals by McEnroe.
