In 1641, the ninth Duke of Medina Sidonia and the sixth Marquis of Ayamonte allegedly conspired to set up the duke as an independent king of Andalusia, inspired by the Portuguese revolt of 1640. The conspiracy was brought to an end in summer 1641 after the plans of rebellion were discovered.
