An ornithopter (from Ancient Greek ὄρνις (órnis) 'bird' and πτερόν (pterón) 'wing') is an aircraft that flies by flapping its wings. Designers sought to imitate the flapping-wing flight of birds, bats, and insects. The term covers a wide range of possible designs.
